How to Regulate Crypto
April 26, 2018The record-setting GoFundMe page for the families of victims and survivors of the Humboldt Broncos bus accident has become a central point for the passion and aid being offered by Canadians, but it has also generated approximately $275,000 in service fees.
15 people were murdered when a semi crashed into the Junior A hockey team’s bus in northeastern Saskatchewan last Friday. Fourteen others were injured, some critically.
While GoFundMe no longer charges a 5% platform fee, a third-party payment processing fee of 2.9% plus $0.30 from every donation is collected — regardless of the situation of the fundraiser.
Rob Soloman, the GoFundMe CEO said “It’s costly to run a business like this”. “Credit-card handling fee we charge is common. They are what most e-commerce websites charge.”
Users are also given the choice to “tip” GoFundMe during the donation procedure as a way to “sustain and enhance” the platform.
As per Soloman “We have to deliver outstanding service. The confidence and security elements as they relate to this campaign specifically. We are teaming up with the world’s leading experts in how to deliver funds in this type of situation, and we are making sure the money goes to the right individuals in the right approach,”.
Don Heider, founder of the Centre for Digital Ethics and Policy at Royal University in Chicago, contends that the principles of charging people for their charitable donations are debatable.
